2 lakes, 2 different rules, and we all benefit

I read with concern the article (“Speed bump,” Feb. 8) about proposed changes to horsepower limits on Lake Macbride. I like the option of enjoying the fast-paced fun of the Coralville Reservoir at times; at other times, the slower and relaxing experience of Lake Macbride. These two wonderful recreational resources are a few feet apart, and the state's rules provide two exceptional but different opportunities.
Many residents from Eastern Iowa bring their canoe, kayak, or small fishing boat, while others rent a canoe, paddleboat or small-motor pontoon, and safely have family fun on Lake Macbride. Many college students and big-engine boaters flock to the reservoir for a different kind of fun. The University of Iowa Sailing Club and others with small sailboats come to Macbride for a safe, fun experience; those who want to water ski or go tubing head to the reservoir for their adrenaline rush. We are fortunate to have both these options within an actual stone's throw of each other.
The proposed change is the equivalent of allowing motocross dirt bikes on state park hiking trails. Because these bike owners pay taxes, shouldn't they be able use the trails their taxes help maintain? Of course not.
Everyone has a choice under current law. I'll bet most people who visit Lake Macbride do so because it's different - slower, quieter, safer. Let's leave these two wonderfully different places to peacefully coexist.
