What’s nearly as strong as concrete, but floats on water? Pykrete!
Pykrete is made up of 86% frozen water and 14% wood pulp (such as sawdust or paper).
It’s easy to make, durable and strong. That’s why Geoffrey Pyke proposed making aircraft carrier ships out of it during World War II. Through never actually put into use, this wonder material can still be used to make all kinds of cool things.
Follow the instructions below to create your very own pykrete ship.
What you need:
- This newspaper
- Water
- A plastic container
- A plastic bag or cling wrap
- A freezer
- A large sink or tub
- Extras: Marbles, pennies or small rocks
What you do:
1. Tear some newspaper into small strips.
2. Soak the strips in water.
3. Line a plastic container with cling wrap or a plastic bag. (Tip! When you line your container with wet paper strips, lay each layer in opposite directions.)
4.Now line the container with wet paper. Overlap the pieces.
5. Repeat for several layers.
6. Freeze overnight.
7. Remove from container.
8. Fill a tub or large sink with cold water.
9. Float your boat!
More you can try
- Put pennies, rocks or other small items in your boat. How much can it carry?
- Time how long it takes to melt.
- What could you try next time to make your pykrete boat stronger?
