Every day, we see things made up of layers. A layer is an amount of something that is spread over an area. Food is often made with layers. Can you think of some foods that have layers?
One delicious food that has layers is pizza!
You can use layers to create a pizza collage. A collage is a work of art that is made by attaching pieces of different materials. Here's how to create a pizza collage with all the layers of toppings you like to eat pizza in real life.
You will need:
•
Paper/cardboard cut into a circle or triangle or a pizza slice tray
•
A variety of paper and craft materials (different colors and textures)
•
Glue stick
•
Crayons or markers
•
Scissors
•
(optional) device with internet access
•
(optional) Pizza or fruit pizza ingredients
Before you start, listen to the book 'The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza' by Philemon Sturges. You can listen to the story online at youtu.be/7so7q3UH1e8.
How did the little red hen make her pizza? What ingredients do you like on your pizza? How do you think Amy Walrod, the illustrator of this book, created the pictures on each page?
They are collages, just like your pizza craft!
How to make your pizza collage
1. Cut a piece of paper or cardboard into a triangle or a circle to use as the base of your pizza.
2. Use a variety of paper and craft materials to design your perfect pizza. Think about which colors and textures will add interest to your artwork and best describe the toppings you're adding. Your layers might include crust, sauce, toppings and cheese. Glue the pieces together.
3. Give your pizza a creative name and description, just like on a pizza restaurant menu!
When you've finished your masterpiece, share your pizza collage with someone in your family. Tell them what you enjoyed about creating your perfect pizza, what was challenging about making your collage and what toppings you used on your pizza.
