Metro STEAM Academy students make replicas of Cedar Rapids landmarks out of gingerbread last month

CEDAR RAPIDS — Metro STEAM Academy last month continued its tradition of creating community landmarks out of gingerbread.
This season’s structures represent four of NewBo City Market’s major sponsors: Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Bankers Trust Company, MidAmerican Energy and GreenState Credit Union.
The buildings are designed and constructed to a scale of one inch equaling seven feet. This means all four buildings are in scale with each other, and seven feet is represented for every one inch of gingerbread.
During the design and planning phase of the project, architects from Neumann Monson Architects of Iowa City helped students lay out their drawings. Students laser cut cardboard skeletons and templates before baking the gingerbread. After cooling the cookie over a weekend, construction and decoration began Dec. 19.
Metro STEAM Academy (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) is an instructional program designed around an entrepreneurial mindset. The school aims to capture student’s joy for learning through rigorous coursework focused on practical experiences, integrated science, technology, engineering and math, according to the school’s website.
