Thursday was the deadline for candidates for school board to file their affidavits of candidacy and nomination petitions.
School boards establish the vision and goals for the public schools in their district and set standards for the performance of schools and superintendents, according to the National School Boards Association.
School boards — whose members are unpaid in Iowa — are responsible for making the final financial and policy decisions for their districts.
The following is the list of school board candidates The Gazette has obtained so far to run for seats in school districts in Linn and Johnson counties. Some districts have not finished verifying signatures on nomination petitions; a full list will be published when available.
