The University of Iowa is implementing a program that allows most recyclable items to put in the same container rather than having to be separated.
What is known as single-stream recycling will start on campus Sept. 1 and will be phased in at all major UI buildings in the coming months, according to a news release Friday.
Newspaper, office paper, cardboard, lab plastics, nonredeemable drink containers, plastics, tin, aluminum, and most food containers will be placed in the same collection bin instead of being sorted into individual containers. Redeemable plastics and landfill items will continue to be treated separately as in the past, according to the release.
