University of Northern Iowa officials have offered voluntary buyouts to 29 tenured professors whose academic programs have been targeted for downsizing.
The school said administrators met with the affected professors Thursday before announcing details of plans to close 23 majors, 19 minors and 16 graduate programs and to restructure 19 others.
The professors will have until April 23 to decide whether to take the buyout, which will pay them a year's worth of salary and cover the cost of 18 months of health and dental insurance. They would have to leave the university's employment by June 29.
If enough of them do not take buyouts, the university may have to resort to layoffs.
