Fact: More than 300 million children around the world are without shoes. This year, Xavier High School is teaming up with Soles4Souls in an effort to make that number a little smaller. Soles4Souls is a charity that collects shoes from the warehouses of footwear companies and the closets of ordinary people and then distributes the shoes to people in need, regardless of race, religion, class, or any other criteria.
Since 2005, Soles4Souls has delivered more than 16 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes. The shoes have been distributed to people in over 127 countries, including Kenya, Thailand, Nepal and the United States.
After learning that every year year, more than 1.5 billion pairs of shoes lay idle in American closets – many of which can be saved from landfills - Xavier students decided to do their part by participating in a Soles4Souls shoe drive with a goal of collecting and sending 1,000 pairs of shoes to the organization.
Gently used shoe donations can be dropped off at Xavier High School (with a $2 donation for postage) any time between January 30 and February 10, 2012. Shoe donations will also be accepted at the boys basketball game on Tuesday, January 31 (vs. Dubuque Wahlert) and the girls basketball game on Friday, February 3 (vs. LinnMar).
