The state Board of Regents today approved a $100 spring tuition surcharge for students at the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa.
The board voted 6-3 in support of the surcharge, with regents Michael Gartner, Ruth Harkin and Greta Johnson voting against it.
The surcharge is among steps the regent universities will take this year to trim nearly $60 million, due to 10 percent state budget cuts.
The surcharge will generate $2.2 million at the UI, $2.4 million at ISU and $1 million at UNI.
