Police investigating vandalism at Kingston Stadium
Jul. 12, 2010 3:59 pm
Clean-up crews have their work cut out for them after someone spray painted graffiti on the press box, stadium seats and other areas at Cedar Rapids' Kingston Stadium over the weekend.
One look at the press box at this community facility is enough to tell you someone spent considerable time over the weekend doing damage with cans of spray paint. And once crews start, it's at least a good part of a day's worth of work remove all the traces.
District officials say the amount of damage probably adds up to around $1,500.
Some spots, like the press box, can simply be repainted to remove the traces of graffiti.
Other areas, including raw concrete and stadium seats, will need the use of sand blasting equipment and a special “soft silicon” formula to remove paint without damaging what's underneath.
It's obvious the graffiti vandal displayed an artistic bent in some areas. But in others, there are definite threat messages,
Laurel Day, administrator at the superintendent's office, said some messages included a vow to blow the stadium up.
“As you went further down, started investigating into the tunnels, there definitely is some threats and some political slander and things we take very seriously and things we will be investigating,” said Day.
One message even referred to President Obama saying “Obama lies–he has more wire taps than Bush.”
School administrators want to document the vandalism extensively before cleaning and show the style to art teachers and fellow students in the district.
The hope is someone will recognize the style and point to the artist. The district has security cameras watching the stadium and employees are looking at the tapes now to see if whoever did this is recognizable to police.
