The school board in Dubuque has unanimously approved the layoffs of 70 teachers, five nurses and one administrator.
The list was approved at a meeting on Monday. It includes 15 special-education teachers, nine social studies teachers, eight English teachers and six art teachers. The district had projected 88.5 positions be terminated. The final total is less than that because some workers took retirement and their jobs were not filled.
Officials with the district also are expected to eliminate more than 50 paraprofessional positions.
Board member Larry Loeppke says he wants people to know he is "sorry we had to do this."
