A record 641 runners and walkers braved the freezing cold temperatures on May 8 to participate in the Third Annual Lace Up for Learning 5K, 10K and Family Fun Run. Students and staff from 30 of District schools made up 281 of the total participants. Some runners traveled from as far away as Colorado, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Illinois to help make this the most successful run to date. The event supports the Cedar Rapids Community School District Foundation.
Lace Up For Learning has also served as a great way to introduce kids to fitness and the joy of running, according to Amy Geiger, Foundation Director. Several area schools have running clubs that meet two to three times a week.
“Students learn the proper way to train for distance running and use the clubs as a way to prepare themselves for participation in the 5K or 10K,” Geiger explained. “Lace Up for Learning provides an opportunity for a number of students to race in their first distance event. Many parents join their children on the course, making this a great family event.”
Additionally, the race is becoming known for its one-of-a-kind Olympic style finish on the track at Kingston Stadium and offers the only 10K course in this area. Participation has more than doubled from the first year and the 10K run has nearly tripled in the number of entrants. Senator Chuck Grassley was among the 298 5K runners.
Proceeds from Lace Up for Learning benefit the Foundation's efforts to fund a variety of District projects, programs, equipment and curriculum related needs that enhance the educational experience for students.
