The Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School Flute Choir has been selected to perform at the Iowa Band Masters State Convention on Friday, May 14, in Des Moines. The annual convention selects ensembles from around the state to perform for the convention attendees. The selection process is rigorous. Directors submit audio tapes and a panel of judges determine the ensembles selected to perform.
“It is such an honor for our flute Choir to be chosen to perform for the band masters,” said Lesley Fleer, director. “We are thrilled with the opportunity to play before the best audience in the state.”
The Kennedy flute choir has a long history of success, consistently earning Division I ratings at state contest and often earning Best of Center honors. Recently, the flute choir was asked to perform at a Cedar Rapids District gathering in honor of Superintendent Dr. David Benson. Many of the students that have participated in this ensemble have continued their playing at the collegiate level, not only as music majors but as contributing members of their music program.
Ms. Fleer is currently in her 16th year as an instrumental music instructor. This is her 10th year as a director in the Kennedy High School Band Department. She is the director of the marching band, director of Symphonic Band, co-director of Concert Band, directs the combo for the show choirs and also directs the pit orchestra for the spring musicals.
