An International Bazaar and Food Fair set for Saturday at the Islamic Center of Cedar Rapids will help fund a new Montessori preschool at the center.
Foods and other items from countries represented in Cedar Rapids' Muslim community - Thailand, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, India, Jordan and Lebanon, among others - will be available for sale or auction.
The event will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Islamic Center, 2999 First Ave. SW.
Lunch will be served from noon to 2 p.m., said Surriah Igram, one of the organizers.
Options will include a gyro plate or a falafel plate for $5. Crafts, Middle Eastern rugs, baked goods and other items also will be available.
Proceeds will go toward developing a Montessori preschool at the center, Igram said. Such preschools focus on nurturing children's natural development and teaching creativity, problem solving, critical thinking and time-management skills.
“We have these big, beautiful classrooms - it's a shame to not use them very often,” Igram said.
Though children will be taught Arabic and Islamic practices, Igram said the preschool will be open to those of all faith backgrounds. The Arabic and Islamic portions can be moved to a different area.
