DES MOINES - Graduation rates for high school seniors were higher in 2010 than 2009 overall and in all but one of the subcategories tracked by the Iowa Department of Education.
Figures released this afternoon showed that 88.8 percent of the class of 2010 graduated on time, which is up 1.5 percentage points from last year's 87.3 percent.
The graduation rate among black students, however, fell from 72.1 percent to an even 72 percent. Hispanic students and English language learning students posted the largest year-over-year gains. Hispanic students increased their rate from 68.8 percent to 76.5 percent, and ELL students went up from 64 percent to 72.7 percent.
