Jul. 15, 2016 7:49 pm
IOWA CITY - A celebration of life service for JC Meardon has been set.
Meardon, 16, died Tuesday after being struck by a minivan Monday night while walking with friends on Dane Road, just south of the Highway 218 overpass.
The community service takes place from 5-9 p.m. Saturday, July 23, in the cafeteria at City High, 1900 Morningside Drive in Iowa City, according to an obituary posted Friday on the Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service website.
The Meardon family is also planning private services at the funeral home. You can read the full obituary and share condolences and memories at www.gayandciha.com.
According to the obituary, Meardon's friends and family plan to establish a foundation in JC's memory to support the sport of soccer in association with Iowa City High School and the Iowa City Soccer Club. Meardon played for the club, where he was coached by Jon Cook, and was captain of the school's freshman-sophomore team last season. City High boys soccer coach Jose Michel Fajardo retired Meardon's No. 12 jersey earlier this week. The goal of the foundation is to support projects related to soccer fields and scholarship funds for soccer players in need of financial assistance, the obituary states.
In the obituary, Meardon's family expresses its appreciation for the outpouring of community support it has received during the past week, including during a candlelight vigil attended by hundreds on Wednesday.
Meardon is survived by his parents, Chuck and Kristi Meardon, sister Madison and brother Grant.
