Eagle Vision 'on the air' at Erskine

Fourth and fifth grade students at Erskine Elementary School are learning about broadcasting at by producing a weekly news and information program that is televised live to all classrooms.

Five crews of 10 students each work behind the scenes and in the spotlight to create the 15-minute show.

To be considered for a news team, interested students explained what they hoped to learn from the experience, focusing on communication or technical skill development. Once identified, the students had the opportunity to work with parent volunteer and local television personality Tiffany O'Donnell to learn more about what is needed when working either in front of or behind the camera. The students also toured a local news station.

“The students choose the story topics, conduct interviews, write and present the news, and operate the camera,” said Lesa Neff, Erskine's media secretary. 

Eagle Vision broadcasts school news of the week, as well as special features that have evolved from current school and local events. Student broadcasters presented a reader's theater for America Reads Day, and recently interviewed Cedar Rapids Mayor-elect Ron Corbett.

A regular feature on the program is the “Let's Do Our PARRT” segment. PARRT is the District's social, emotional, behavioral curriculum and stands for personal best, active listening, respect, responsibility, and trustworthiness. The segment includes interviews with students, staff and community members and features a student written rap song using the PARRT language.

“Each crew brings something new and unique to the show,” Neff said. “Participation is a real confidence booster for the students.” A benefit for the school community is the focus on the PARRT program, showing different ways that all students and staff strive to do their best and be respectful.”
