More than 300 students from Jefferson, Kennedy, and Washington high schools been named recipients of the prestigious Advanced Placement Scholar Award presented by the College Board.
Advanced Placement courses are college level classes. Students have the option at the end of the courses to take national tests in May, which are scored in June.If they score exceptionally well on AP exams, they are named AP Scholars.
The AP Scholar Award is given to students who score a 3 or higher on three or more tests, which are scored on a 1 to 5 scale, with 5 being the highest. The additional designation of AP Scholar with Honor goes to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams they take and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. AP Scholars with Distinction are students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams they take and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
Both Kennedy and Washington high schools set new records for the number of AP Scholars at their schools last year. Kennedy had 155 students named AP Scholars, and Washington had 145.
In the following list of District AP honorees, an asterisk denotes those who graduated in 2009. The rest received their awards before their senior year of testing and have at least had one more year in which to complete college level work and possibly earn a higher-level AP Scholar Award.
