IOWA CITY - The City High Jazz Ensemble is one of 15 Class 4A bands invited to perform at the 2011 Iowa Jazz Championships at the Des Moines Civic Center on April 12.
The Iowa Jazz Championships invite 60 of Iowa's finest high school jazz bands (15 each from Class 1A-Class 4A schools). The top two bands from each of the classes will perform at an evening finals event.
“Getting an invitation to perform at the Iowa Jazz Championships is a huge honor for any band. I enjoy it because it gives the students another chance to perform, have fun, and play in a great venue. It's a great reward for all their hard work,” said band conductor Ryan Arp.
The Jazz Ensemble, City High's elite jazz group, will present four pieces at its 9:30 a.m. performance: Rockabye River by Duke Ellington, The Nearness of You by John Clayton, Riverscape by Fred Sturm, and Indian Blues by Bob Washut.
The Iowa Jazz Championships began 30 years ago, founded by Iowa jazz educators. Tickets for the separate daytime and evening events are $10 per event. For more information:
