School board authorizes district to negotiate final terms

CEDAR RAPIDS — Independent contractor KCE Champions LLC will continue to provide before- and after-school care to children in the Cedar Rapids Community School District this summer and for the 2024-25 school year.
The school board gave approval Monday to district leadership to negotiate final terms with Champions, which began providing care in the district in fall 2022. Some modifications to the agreement include terms for safety, communication, performance monitoring and curriculum expectations.
Superintendent Tawana Grover said Champions won out because of its staffing levels and already being licensed with the district.
In negotiations, there were “numerous conversations about expectations,” and input from families using the program will be gathered next school year, Grover said.
“I do think it will be helpful to have some firsthand information from our families,” she said.
The district also considered Waypoint Services and Right at School to provide before- and after-school care to families, but ultimately chose to continue with Champions.
