More than 74 percent of Johnson County residents would support a bond measure to build a new county sheriff’s office and jail, according to draft results from a community survey commissioned by the Board of Supervisors.

Under a plan proposed by Iowa City, federally funded rental assistance vouchers, combined with VA support services, would be offered to veterans living in the units.

The Johnson County Board of Supervisors took the first steps Wednesday in a process that will create districts for their representation of the county, as is now required by a bill signed into law last week by Gov. Kim Reynolds.
The bill, Senate File 75, requires counties that house a public university to elect county supervisors by districts, rather than having members elected at-large. Further, special elections will now be required to fill most board vacancies in Iowa’s largest counties.
