Materials to help local government officials implement a new state law that requires training on Iowa’s open meetings and records laws are on the way from the state board that oversees the laws.

More Iowa herds have tested positive for a tick-borne parasite that can sicken and kill cattle, but experts said they still do not expect the illness to become widespread across the state.

Heavy rain in April led to long planting delays, but conditions were ripe this week for significant progress. Farmers have less than two weeks to plant or face yield declines.

“The government shutdown possibility sucks all of the oxygen out of the room,” Iowa State University professor Chad Hart says. “So until that is taken care of, you really can’t make forward progress on any other piece of legislation, including a Farm Bill.”
