STOCKTON, Calif. — The Iowa State men's golf team reached the pinnacle of college golf by finishing third at the NCAA Stockton Regional at 847, carding a 3-under 285 in the final round Wednesday afternoon. The top five teams advanced to the NCAA Championship. The Cyclones had a 10-shot cushion over No. 6 LSU, the first team to miss the cut.
The Cyclones fell just short of winning their first NCAA Regional, as Kansas edged the Cyclones by three shots (844). ISU's third-place finish tied for its best showing in an NCAA postseason event.
Iowa State is now among 30 teams to advance to the NCAA Championship, May 25-30 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
Iowa sophomore Alex Schaake fired a 73 (2 over par) in the final round of NCAA regionals on Wednesday at the par-71 Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio, to tie for 24th.
The second team All-Big Ten selection carded a 54-hole score of 220 (7-over; 73, 74, 73) to miss a top-20 finish by one stroke.
