SOLON — It wasn’t merely “survive and advance” for Quentin Nauman.
It was, however, win and move on.
“I just raced to win today,” the junior ace from Western Dubuque said after claiming the boys’ individual championship at Thursday’s Class 3A state-qualifying cross country meet at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area.
“I raced to win, and to get ready for state. There’s a good line of runners, and I’ve got to be ready.”
Nauman steadily pulled away from an early burst by Des Moines Christian’s Caleb Ten Pas and captured the title in 15 minutes, 29 seconds.
“Ten Pas was out really, really fast,” Nauman said. “I just took it as it is.”
Led by Ten Pas’ runner-up finish (he ran in 15:47), Des Moines Christian rolled to the boys’ team title, scoring 29 points on a 2-3-4-9-11 finish.
Central DeWitt (79) and Davenport Assumption (105) were the other two qualifiers.
The 3A portion of the state meet is Friday, Nov. 1, at 10:30 a.m. (girls) and 11:15 a.m. (boys) at Lakeside Golf Course, Fort Dodge.
CPU’s Grace Estling wins girls’ race
Locked in a duel with Izzy Hardin of Maquoketa for 2 1/2 miles, Center Point-Urbana sophomore Grace Estling broke free and won the girls’ race in 18:47.
Hardin finished in 18:55.
“I’m so happy,” Estling said. “I was kind of dreading it all day.
“I got out quick and tried to push the pace. This was kind of the same race as when we ran at West Delaware ... (Hardin) beat me there by 10 seconds.
“She slowed down a bit, and I just went for it.”
Solon (67 points), Marion (83) and Des Moines Christian (97) nabbed the three girls’ bids.
Sydney Dee led Solon’s charge with a third-place effort of 19:05. Kinley Mai — one of three scoring freshmen for the Spartans — was eighth.
Marion’s Addison Dabroski, Kyra Cordes and Elise Moore were sixth, seventh and 13th.
Cedar Rapids Xavier had three qualifiers: Mia Deegan was fourth in the girls’ race; Andrew Allen and Kaleb Wilgenbusch ran sixth and 12th among the boys.
“I like to get out fast,” Deegan said. “I was in the top five after the first mile, so I was able to relax. I looked to God for strength and was able to keep my place.”
