Area capsules for Week 7 of the high school football season:
CEDAR RAPIDS WASHINGTON at CEDAR RAPIDS PRAIRIE
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at John Wall Field
* Records and rankings: No. 1 Washington is 6-0 overall, 2-0 Class 4A District 6; Prairie is 3-3, 3-1.
* Overview: Washington moved to the top spot in the Gazette/KCRG/KGYM poll this week after another impressive victory (40-2 over Ottumwa) and Bettendorf's close call against Iowa City West. The Warriors rank in the top five in 4A in both scoring offense (39.5 ppg) and scoring defense (9.8). Tavian Patrick has rushed for 615 yards, an average of 11.4 per carry. Johnny Dobbs has been the guy when the Warriors near the goal line; he has found the end zone eight times. Prairie got stung 27-23 last week at Iowa City High, falling behind 21-6, rallying for the lead, then giving up a late touchdown. As a result, the Hawks still need a win (and maybe two) to get to the playoffs. Keagan Pinter has rushed for 815 yards and seven TDs.
CEDAR FALLS at LINN-MAR
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Linn-Mar Stadium
* TV: KCRG 9.2
* Records and rankings: Both teams are 5-1 overall, 2-0 Class 4A District 5. Cedar Falls is ranked No. 8.
* Overview: It has been apparent for several weeks that this, in all likelihood, is the pivotal game in determining the 4A-5 champion. Linn-Mar has made great strides after a two-win campaign in 2013 behind quarterback Ryan Schmidt (a combined 16 touchdowns, running and passing, the big-play ability of Perrion Scott and a vastly improved defense that has allowed just 14.5 points per game. Cedar Falls can slow its opposition a little as well; the Tigers' surrender of 10.6 points per game is fourth-best in 4A. Jared Halterman has collected 46 tackles, 12 for loss.
IOWA CITY WEST at DUBUQUE HEMPSTEAD
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Dubuque (Dalzell Field)
* Records and rankings: West is 3-3 overall, 1-0 Class 4A District 7; Hempstead is 5-1, 1-0.
* Overview: West very nearly pulled off one of the season's biggest upsets in the state, rallying from a 20-3 fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime before Bettendorf escaped 28-27. The top three teams in this district (these two, plus Pleasant Valley) still appear too close to call, and this game is a pivotal one. Hempstead has won five games in a row, most by lopsided scores. Matt Zenner is a hard-nosed runner; he has compiled 456 yards and eight touchdowns. West's Aaron Bleil ranks fifth in 4A in passing yards, with 1,144. Oliver Martin has 36 catches for 461 yards.
CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER at DUBUQUE WAHLERT
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Dubuque (Rock Bowl)
* Records and rankings: No. 6 Xavier is 4-2 overall, 3-1 Class 3A District 4; Wahlert is 2-4, 2-1.
* Overview: Xavier lost a bit of its armor of 3A invincibility last week when it stumbled at home to Western Dubuque, 7-6. The Saints try to rebound against familiar MVC rival Wahlert. To do so, they'll have to be a little more balanced. They did not complete a pass last week against the Bobcats. Jay Kortemeyer has rushed for 566 yards while Dylan Eller has intercepted five passes. Defense has let the Golden Eagles down this season; they are giving up 31.7 points per game. Riley Hasken has rushed for 1,078 yards and 10 touchdowns.
WATERLOO WEST at CEDAR RAPIDS JEFFERSON
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Kingston Stadium
* Records and rankings: West is 2-4 overall, 1-1 Class 4A District 5; Jefferson is 3-3, 1-1.
* Overview: Jefferson has set itself up nicely for a playoff berth, and the J-Hawks can snag a postseason spot if they take care of business the next two week against the Waterloo schools. Jefferson, which is coming off a 35-17 loss last week at Cedar Falls, has risen with no small measure due to the arrival of quarterback Jesse Furrow, who has passed for 953 yards and nine touchdowns. West has won two of its last three games, and - with a young team - could be a pain in the final stages of the season. Quarterback Devon Moore (897 yards) is a sophomore while the top rusher (John Draine) and receiver (Trey Burt) are juniors.
IOWA CITY HIGH at BURLINGTON
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Burlington
* Records and rankings: City High is 1-5 overall, 1-1 Class 4A District 6; Burlington is 3-3, 0-2.
* Overview: After starting 0-5, City High enhanced its postseason hopes greatly last week, knocking off Cedar Rapids Prairie, 27-23. The Little Hawks dominated the first half, then fell behind, then came up with a clutch drive to score the go-ahead touchdown with less than 2 minutes to go. Sophomore Nate Wieland has passed for 709 yards and rushed for 342. Burlington has cooled off greatly after a 3-1 start, giving up 91 points in its first two district games. Garrett Grimshaw has rushed for 646 yards and seven touchdowns.
WESTERN DUBUQUE at MARION
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Thomas Park Field
* Records and rankings: Western Dubuque is 4-2 overall, 3-0 Class 3A District 4; Marion is 1-5, 0-3.
* Overview: The ripples of Friday's shock waves are still being felt throughout the state. Western Dubuque claimed sole ownership of the 3A-4 lead with a 7-6 upset of Cedar Rapids Xavier. The Bobcats look to avoid a slip-up when they return to the Metro area for a battle with the Indians, who have lost five in a row and have sunk to the bottom of the district. Ben Burds and Reid Hoefler have rushed for nearly 1,000 yards between them. Marion will try to resuscitate an offense that has managed just 21 points in the last three weeks.
IOWA CITY REGINA at WEST MARSHALL
* Site and time: 7 p.m. Friday, at State Center
* Records and rankings: No. 2 Regina is 5-1 overall, 4-0 Class 1A District 6; West Marshall is 0-6, 0-3.
* Overview: In previous years, this would be a matchup of 1A powers, but West Marshall has fallen hard this season. As a result, a blowout is likely. Regina has won five straight games, and the margin of victory in its four district games is 188-32. Drew Cook is one of the state's most efficient quarterbacks, throwing for 1,028 yards and 13 touchdowns (and no interceptions). Nick Phillips is a big-play guy, averaging 17.5 yards per rush and catching 25 passes. West Marshall is allowing almost 40 points per game.
CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY at WATERLOO EAST
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Waterloo
* Records and rankings: Both teams are 0-6 overall, 0-2 Class 4A District 5.
* Overview: Despite the 0-6 record, Kennedy remains in contention for a playoff berth, but the turnaround absolutely must begin this week. The Cougars jumped to a 14-0 lead last week before Linn-Mar came back for a 29-14 victory. Shaun Beyer has been a productive two-way performer for the Cougars, leading the team in receptions (16, for 262 yards, with five touchdowns) and tackles (39). Kennedy has been competitive in most of its games; East has not. The Trojans' closest loss was 31 points, and they have been shut out four times.
SOUTH WINNESHIEK at DIKE-NEW HARTFORD
* Site and time: 7 p.m. Friday, at Dike
* Records and rankings: Third-rated South Winn is 6-0 overall, 3-0 Class 1A District 4; No. 9 DNH is 5-1, 3-0.
* Overview: South Winneshiek has all the makings of a state-championship contender in 1A. The Warriors have been dominant on both sides of the ball through six weeks. This will be a tough test, though, with sole ownership of the district lead on the line. South Winn has big-play capability on the ground in Ryan Hageman (716 yards, 15 TDs) and in the air in Jordan Rommes (22 catches for 22.4 per reception). The Warriors' defense is just as impressive, allowing 8.7 points per game. DNH has won four straight, all in convincing fashion. Sophomore Trent Johnson has rushed for 757 yards and 13 touchdowns.
MOUNT VERNON at ANAMOSA
* Site and time: 7 p.m. Friday, at Anamosa
* Records and rankings: Mount Vernon is 4-2 overall, 3-0 Class 2A District 4; Anamosa is 5-1, 4-0.
* Overview: It seems like every season features a rags-to-riches story, and right now it's Anamosa that is enjoying the script. The Raiders came into the season with a long losing streak, but broke that in Week 2, triggering a five-game win string that already has them planted in the 2A playoff field. Anamosa is junior-laden, so this doesn't appear to be a one-year deal. Kolin Schulte is the quarterback, and also has three interceptions and two fumble recoveries on defense. Mount Vernon has won four games in a row thanks to a defense that appears to be getting better by the week. The Mustangs have allowed 10 points in the last two games.
DAVENPORT ASSUMPTION at CLEAR CREEK AMANA
* Site and time: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Tiffin
* Records and rankings: No. 10 Assumption is 4-2 overall, 3-0 Class 3A District 5; No. 9 CCA is 5-1, 4-0.
* Overview: Clear Creek Amana already has a playoff berth in its pocket, and can clinch a district championship if it takes down the Knights. Keyan McAreavy is tied for the state lead in interceptions (among 11-man teams) with seven. Tanner Bandy leads the Clippers' attack with 665 rushing yards and 355 receiving. A former 4A team, Assumption took a pair of knocks early against Bettendorf and Cedar Rapids Xavier, but has responded with four consecutive convincing wins. The Knights prefer to run the ball, with Chase Hager and Joe Argo combining for more that 900 yards.
OTHER GAMES INVOLVING METRO/IOWA CITY TEAMS
* Cedar Valley Christian (1-5, 0-4 8-Man District 4) at West Central (3-3, 3-1), 7 p.m. Friday
