Week 2 football capsules for key area games:
CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY vs. CEDAR RAPIDS WASHINGTON
When and where: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Kingston Stadium (Washington is the home team, and its fans sit on the west bleachers)
Records and rankings: Both teams are 1-0. Washington is ranked No. 3 in Class 4A; Kennedy is No. 10.
Overview: Washington pushed its regular-season winning streak to 16 last week, but it came with a lot more stress than expected. The Warriors were held to a 14-all standstill for three quarters before getting past Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 27-14, Saturday afternoon. Tavion Stewart's 75-yard touchdown run put Washington ahead for good. The Warriors got a pair of short TD runs from Johnny Dobbs. Tyler Dralle ran for 265 yards and four touchdowns as Kennedy held off Iowa City West, 34-31, on Thursday. Dralle ranks fourth in the state among 11-player running backs in yardage through one week.
CEDAR RAPIDS JEFFERSON at CEDAR RAPIDS PRAIRIE
When and where: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at John Wall Field
Records and rankings: Jefferson is 0-1, Prairie is 1-0. Both teams are unranked.
Overview: Prairie made a winner of Coach Mark Bliss in his debut in Iowa on Saturday, rallying from an early 10-0 deficit to defeat Linn-Mar, 31-17. Tyler Nunemaker passed for 176 yards on 6-of-11 passing, with a pair of long touchdowns. The game turned on a blocked field goal in the second quarter, after which the Hawks scored 24 consecutive points. Jefferson played third-ranked Washington to a stalemate for three quarters before falling, 27-14. Jared Eivins completed 17 of 27 passes for 217 yards and two TDs.
LINN-MAR at PLEASANT VALLEY
When and where: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Pleasant Valley
Records and rankings: Linn-Mar is 0-1, Pleasant Valley is 1-0. Both teams are unranked.
Overview: For 1 1/2 quarters Saturday, Linn-Mar looked as if it hadn't missed a beat since last year's memorable 9-2 season. But a blocked field goal turned the tide, and the Lions fell to Cedar Rapids Prairie, 31-17. Still, they moved the ball effectively at times, racking up 392 yards and 22 first downs. Reese Phillips completed 16 of 29 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns. Pleasant Valley used a big defensive effort to get past North Scott, 14-7. The difference was a 53-yard fumble return for touchdown by Ben Slavens.
WEST DES MOINES VALLEY at IOWA CITY WEST
When and where: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Trojan Field
Records and rankings: Valley is 1-0 and top-rated in Class 4A. West is 0-1.
Overview: Once a promising prospect at Cedar Rapids Washington, Rocky Lombardi returns to Eastern Iowa as the quarterback of the top-ranked Tigers. Valley made an immediate statement with a Week 1 rout of Waukee, 44-13. Lombardi rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another. West's late comeback fell short last week, 34-31, despite 357 yards passing from Alex Henderson, the most of anybody in the state in Week 1. Oliver Martin accounted for 203 of those passing yards - on 11 catches - for a pair of touchdowns.
BETTENDORF at IOWA CITY HIGH
When and where: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Bates Field
Records and rankings: Bettendorf is 1-0 and ranked No. 4 in Class 4A. City High is 0-1.
Overview: Bettendorf's regular-season win streak stands at 11 games after defeating Davenport Assumption, 35-28, in Week 1. Dalton McLaughlin rushed for 129 yards and Dax Emerson added 96, and the duo combined for three touchdowns. City High is coming off a rare losing season, but the Little Hawks were competitive with Cedar Falls in a 35-21 Week 1 loss at the UNI-Dome. Bryce Frantz ran for 80 yards.
DAVENPORT ASSUMPTION at CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER
When and where: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Saints Field
Records and rankings: Xavier is 0-0 and ranked No. 3 in Class 3A. Assumption is 0-1.
Overview: Xavier's season opener was a literal washout. The Saints' encounter at home against West Des Moines Dowling was called off on account of lightning, and it was not and will not be made up. So an eight-game regular season begins Friday against the Knights. Assumption spotted Bettendorf a 21-0 advantage before falling, 35-28. Two of the Knights' touchdowns came in the final minute. Joe Argo passed for 171 yards and ran for 91.
MARION at WASHINGTON (Iowa)
When and where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Washington
Records and rankings: Both teams are 0-1 and unranked.
TV: KCRG 9.2
Overview: Marion's losing streak reached nine games when it was defeated 37-14 at home by Mount Vernon. Kory Walsh ran for 154 yards and a touchdown. Washington was reasonably competitive in a 42-24 loss to 3A top-ranked, defending-champion Pella. Sophomore Ryan Reighard ran for 117 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
IOWA CITY REGINA at CASCADE
When and where: 7 p.m. Friday, at Cascade
Records and rankings: Regina is 1-0 and top-ranked in Class 1A. Cascade is 0-1.
Overview: Regina proved itself as the early favorite (again) in 1A, prevailing against Solon in its opener, 21-13. The Regals recorded seven takeaways, including two interceptions by Nick Phillips, in winning their 14th straight game and their 70th of their last 71. Nathan Stenger ran for 87 yards and two touchdowns. Cascade was stung, 53-0, by Maquoketa.
CEDAR VALLEY CHRISTIAN at CLARKSVILLE
When and where: 7 p.m. Friday, at Clarksville
Records and rankings: Cedar Valley Christian is 1-0; Clarksville is 0-2. Both are unranked.
Overview: Cedar Valley Christian earned its first home win in school history (and just its second overall) last Thursday, whipping Harmony, 65-6. Cole Telecky accounted for four touchdowns - three rushing and one passing - while Apollo Betsworth ran for 76 yards and two TDs. A 2-0 start is not out of the question for the Huskies; Clarksville has allowed 64.5 points per game through its first two contests. Zach Sommerfelt has rushed for 182 yards and two touchdowns.
INDEPENDENCE at NORTH FAYETTE VALLEY
When and where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at West Union
Records and rankings: Both teams are 1-0. North Fayette Valley is top-ranked in Class 2A.
Overview: Defending 2A state champion North Fayette Valley took down one 3A team (Decorah, 22-7) last week, and goes for another. Dillon Baumler and Tanner Kuhens combined for 203 rushing yards, with Baumler scoring a pair of touchdowns. Independence is looking to build on its momentum after making the playoffs last year. The Mustangs got off to a good start, downing Waterloo Columbus, Senior QB Nicholas Holt enjoyed a big night, running for 199 yards and three touchdowns while completing 8 of 9 passes for 101 yards.
MOUNT VERNON at SOLON
When and where: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Solon
Records and rankings: Mount Vernon is 1-0; Class 3A No. 10 Solon is 0-1.
Overview: Solon has owned the Highway 1 rivalry recently, winning 12 consecutive games against its neighbor to the north. The Spartans will try to rebound after giving up seven turnovers in a 21-13 loss to Iowa City Regina. It's a tough opening stretch for the Spartans, who host Cedar Rapids Xavier next week in their district opener. Mount Vernon debuted with a 37-14 conquest of Marion. Five different players scored touchdowns, including Mickey Hines, who ran for 113 yards.
UNION at CENTER POINT-URBANA
When and where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Center Point
Records and rankings: Union is 0-1. CPU is 1-0. Both are unranked.
Overview: Center Point-Urbana forced four turnovers and held off Clear Creek Amana, 17-10, last week. Trevor Franzenburg starred on both sides of the ball, leading the ground attack with 62 yards and collecting 13.5 tackles. Union fell last week to Class A top-rated Gladbrook-Reinbeck, 13-6.
