CEDAR RAPIDS — Less than 24 hours after suffering its first conference loss in nearly four years, Waverly-Shell Rock had a record response.
The Go-Hawks matched a Rivalry Saturday record with 26 first-quarter points and upended Class 4A 10th-ranked Boone, 62-44, Saturday afternoon at the U.S. Cellular Center.
WSR saw its 44-game Northeast Iowa Conference win streak end Friday at the hands of Crestwood, 55-53. But the Go-Hawks (8-4) came out blazing Saturday. They built a 35-17 lead early in the second quarter, then settled for a 40-29 halftime advantage.
The Go-Hawks shot 56 percent in the opening half.
Boone (8-3) got within 44-37 on two free throws by Claire Sandvig, but WSR re-established control by scoring the next seven points.
Rachel Byl paced the Go-Hawks with 15 points. Payton Draper added 10.
Sandvig led Boone with 20 points, including 16 in the first half.
