IOWA CITY —
Iowa City West has named Travis Craig its head boys' track and field coach, pending board approval.
Craig, an elementary teacher in the West school district, has been an assistant with the Trojans since 2005.
He replaces Brian Martz, the boys' cross country coach, who resigned in June after 12 years and two state championships (2007, 2012).
'Coach Craig has been a part of our recent success in track. He knows our school and community and what it takes to get athletes to compete at a high level,' West athletics director Scott Kibby said in a release. 'He's had tremendous success as an athlete and is passionate and enthusiastic about the opportunity to lead West Boys Track. We look forward to his leadership.'
Prior to arriving at West, Craig was an assistant coach and teacher at Webster City.
He was a three-time Iowa Conference track champion and two-time NCAA Division III national qualifier at Wartburg College in the late 1990s, where he also won two IIAC cross country championships and is now a member of the school's Athletic Hall of Fame.
