Timothy Ellis sails through Iowa Open

CEDAR RAPIDS - Timothy Ellis of Boone swept through the Baird Iowa Open.

Ellis won the 16-and-under title, 6-3, 6-1, over Jacob Panjwani of Bettendorf.

Ellis had two ace and only dropped four games, but never on his serve.

'I think I held serve well,” Ellis said. 'I was serving well through this entire tournament.”

Throughout the two days of competition, Ellis never dropped a set.

'It's pretty exciting to come out here and play,” he said.

He was wary of Panjwani.

'He has a monster forehand,” Ellis said. 'He could dictate with it.”

Ellis also picked up a doubles championship with his partner Rami Scheetz of Cedar Rapids. The two beat Zach Glanz and Jonathan Lansing, both of Cedar Rapids.

In the girls' 16-and-under final, Anatta Charoenkul of Fairfield also had an impressive tournament. She scored a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lily Schoeck of Rock Island, Ill., in the finals.

'My serve was good, and the wind helped me with hitting corners,” Charoenkul said.

Schoeck had a strong forehand and could easily put lobs and light returns away.

'I tried to do more slice shots to just try change the pace of the ball,” Charoenkul said.

The tournament runs through Sunday.
