The 'Zen' of archery

CEDAR RAPIDS — When people think of archery, some think of Katniss Everdeen from the "Hunger Games," the Olympics or gym class.
Archery takes focus, concentration and routine. The sport is known more for mental concentration than physical strength.
Cedar Rapids Xavier senior Abbey Karpick, who competed in nationals over the summer in Alabama, started archery when she a freshman. Her interest peaked when she moved from Chicago, where she used to participate in Irish stepping.
'When I moved here I needed to do something with my time instead of just school, so I thought archery would be cool,' she said. 'I have seen it in the Olympics and the 'Hunger Games' movie was coming out in a few months and I thought it was cool to try it, and I stuck with it.'
Archery is a sport that does not involve running or lifting. It is about a 'Zen' state of mind. To prepare before a meet or heat, Karpick has a routine she follows.
'I wake up early and get there earlier so I am not rushed, so I can prepare myself,' she said. 'I eat a better breakfast and I stop talking to people about 30 minutes before so I can get into the zone. I also make sure I have a backup bow if something happens and all my equipment in my car.'
Karpick's coach, Vance Patrilla, has been involved with archery since he was 3. Throughout the years, he has gone through Olympic Trials qualification attempts, family outings and has participated in bow hunting as a hobby. He always has taught one thing to his kids on the Wapsi Warriors team — respect.
'Respect for yourself, others, and the sport,' Patrilla said.
Archery includes routine, focus and concentration all in one.
The sport has grown throughout the years and continues to do so.
All you need is a bow, target, arrows and a goal.
