FORT DODGE — The cooperative merger of the Springville and Central City cross country teams moved from Class 2A to 1A after the 2016-17 school year.
Emily Staal — a homeschool student from Central City — competed in the 2A meet as a freshman and nearly cracked the top 10, finishing 12th against a field that included three eventual state champions.
To coincide with her team's move to Class 1A, Staal put in longer, more arduous hours of training in hopes of making a sizable leap in the standings.
Her efforts paid off in a big way.
'I guess I've been practicing pretty hard this year,' said Staal, who won the 1A girls' individual state title in 18:36, 23 seconds better than Emma Lucas of Bedford. 'More, I think, than last year and I had more experience with it. … I tried to think of it as any other meet.'
Staal rebounded from a slow start and maneuvered through the pack until she found the clearing. Once she was out in front, the crown appeared to be a formality.
'The first part was hard for me to get out,' Staal said. 'I don't know if I wasn't warmed up enough. After I passed them, I tried to get away right away.'
South Winneshiek senior Felicity Taylor was fifth (19:25).
Hudson won the 1A girls' team race with 104 points, while Nodaway Valley (56) claimed the 1A boys' title for the third year in a row.
North Union senior Riley Bauer (16:14) repeated as 1A boys' individual champion.
