DES MOINES — The first day of the state track and field meet didn't feature an area winner in the Class 3A girls' competition.
But it did bring out some excellent area discus contestants.
Led by Katy Misel of Solon, area competitors went 2-3-4 in that event Thursday at Drake Stadium.
Misel's best effort of 131 feet, 3 inches was less than two feet behind champion Linnaea Konfrst of Glenwood (133-1).
Meghan Joens of Cedar Rapids Xavier was third (129-5); Tieranny Keahna of South Tama was fourth (125-11).
The 3A girls' competition was dominated, as it has been since 2013, by Davenport Assumption. The Knights have racked up 36 points through five events, and already own a commanding lead.
Solon is second with 15.5 points, followed by Dubuque Wahlert (12).
Assumption is seeking its fourth consecutive 3A girls' title.
Dianna Slight of Boone set a class record in the 400, in 54.73, an effort that ranks No. 5 all-time in Iowa.
