Area softball Super Ten, through games played Tuesday, June 30:
1. BENTON COMMUNITY (35-1) - Interesting e-mail from a fan contained the word 'underdog” in reference to the Bobcats. This team is nobody's underdog. Nearly half of Alyssa Wiebel's hits are for extra bases, including 14 home runs. She's hitting .570.
2. SOLON (31-3) - Spartans are on the verge of another unbeaten league slate; their win streak is 58 in the Wamac East, dating back to 2011. Sydney Lawson leads the state in runs, with 61, and Taylor Nearad and Emily Ira are in the top 10 in RBIs.
3. CEDAR RAPIDS JEFFERSON (25-6) - Sweep of Class 5A top-rated Iowa City West put the J-Hawks right back in the hunt in the MVC Valley Division. Jefferson rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the opener and a 4-1 hole in the nightcap.
4. IOWA CITY WEST (24-4) - Women of Troy have dropped three in a row (4-2 to Solon, then the aforementioned sweep at the hands of Jefferson), but it's far too early for concern.
5. CEDAR RAPIDS PRAIRIE (21-9) - Loss to City High last Thursday wasn't pretty, but the Hawks still hold a two-game lead in the loss column in the MVC Mississippi Division. Final six league games are on the road.
6. CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER (19-11) - Saints enjoyed an 8-0 mark last week, including a championship of the Linn-Mar/Alburnett Invitational. Twin losses to Waterloo West hurt divisional title hopes. Freshman Charlotte Richards is hitting a team-best .414.
7. CENTER POINT-URBANA (23-12) - Stormin' Pointers were runners-up at the Linn-Mar/Alburnett Invitational, and nearly came all the way back from an 8-0 deficit to Xavier in the title game. Other than its battery, this is still a very young team.
8. MOUNT VERNON (24-8) - Take Benton and Solon out of the mix, and the Mustangs are the hottest team in the area, with 24 wins in 27 games, including 10 in a row. Eighth-grader Sammy Moss is second on the team in average (.392) and runs (30).
9. CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY (21-9) - Split with Linn-Mar on Monday was likely a regional-final preview. Cougars have won six of seven and tangle with Xavier at home Thursday for 42nd Street bragging rights.
10. LINN-MAR (20-13) - Lions close their home schedule tonight against Clinton, then conclude their regular season with six road games against league competition.
