Top area players to watch for the 2017 high school softball season:
COURTNEY COOPER, sr., Lansing Kee — Batted .417 with 23 runs and 66 RBIs. Hit 15 doubles and nine home runs. Compiled a 26-3 pitching record with a 1.02 ERA. 254 strikeouts and 43 walks in 172 1/3 innings. Class 1A first-team all-state selection.
KENDRA COOPER, jr., Lansing Kee — Batted .412 with 43 runs and 49 RBIs. Hit nine doubles and nine home runs. Compiled a 13-3 pitching record with a 1.09 ERA. 127 strikeouts and 26 walks in 96 1/3 innings. Class 1A first-team all-state selection.
KELLI ENGELKEN, sr., Dyersville Beckman — Batted .492 with 25 runs and 59 RBIs. Hit 14 doubles and 10 home runs. Class 3A first-team all-state selection.
AVERY GUY, sr., Cedar Rapids Jefferson — Batted .439 with 44 runs and 27 RBIs. Hit eight doubles and five home runs and stole 14 bases. Class 5A first-team all-state selection.
NATALIE HALVORSON, sr., Cedar Rapids Prairie — Compiled a 20-9 pitching record with a 1.35 ERA. 200 strikeouts and 40 walks in 186 1/3 innings. Class 5A second-team all-state selection.
ASHLEY HAMILTON, sr., Cedar Rapids Kennedy — Batted .438 with 46 runs and 43 RBIs. Hit 20 doubles. Class 5A second-team all-state selection.
BRYN HANRAHAN, sr., Solon — Batted .438 with 53 runs and 42 RBIs. Hit 18 doubles and six triples, and stole 28 bases. Class 3A first-team all-state selection.
KELSEY HORA, sr., Highland — Batted .585 with 42 runs. Hit five triples and stole 33 bases. Class 2A first-team all-state selection.
MADDIE KARR, jr., Center Point-Urbana — Missed the season due to knee injury. Batted .439 with 16 home runs, 56 runs and 55 RBIs as a freshman in 2015.
SARAH LEHMAN, sr., Iowa City Regina — Batted .256 with 29 runs. Hit five home runs. Compiled a 15-11 pitching record with a 1.32 ERA Struck out 293 and walked 69 in 191 innings. Class 2A first-team all-state selection.
KATELYN MANGOLD, sr., West Delaware — Batted .372 with 31 runs and 31 stolen bases. Class 4A second-team all-state selection.
PEYTON PARKER, sr., Union — Batted .476 with 29 runs and 53 RBIs. Hit 18 doubles and five home runs. Compiled a 22-12 pitching record with a 1.23 ERA. Struck out 180 and walked 21 in 232 2/3 innings. Class 3A first-team all-state selection.
LIBBY RYAN, sr., Mount Vernon — Batted .519 with 77 runs and 33 RBIs. Hit six doubles and nine triples. Stole 79 bases without getting caught. Class 3A first-team all-state selection.
TALEAH SMITH, sr., Iowa City West — Batted .490 with 47 runs and 24 RBIs. Stole 47 bases in 50 attempts. Class 5A first-team all-state selection.
MEGAN WEBER, sr., Cedar Rapids Kennedy — Batted .529 with 56 RBIs. Hit 12 doubles and 13 home runs. Class 5A second-team all-state selection.
