ANAMOSA - Kolin Schulte was looking for a little space. He found a lot.
Schulte ran for 240 yards and three touchdowns to lead Anamosa past Williamsburg, 42-14, Monday night in a Class 2A prep football playoff second round game at Downing Field.
Anamosa (11-0) will host district foe Mount Vernon (9-2) in Friday's quarterfinals. The Raiders beat the Mustangs, 45-42, in the regular season at Mount Vernon.
Anamosa ran its veer offense to near perfection, pounding out 437 yards of rushing offense. Senior fullback Trevor Wehling rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown.
'I just look for a little space,” said Schulte, Anamosa's senior quarterback who scored on runs of 2, 70 and 54 yards. 'I make that first read (handoff or not to Wehling) then I find the gaps. The guys made the blocks for me. It wasn't just me.”
As well as Anamosa's offense played, it was the defense and special teams that keyed the victory. Williamsburg (7-4) was held to 202 total yards, and managed only 58 in the second half.
The score was tied at 14 late in the third quarter and Williamsburg had a fourth-and-7 at the Anamosa 34. Senior quarterback Vic Malloy dropped back to pass and was crushed by Anamosa senior defensive end Sam Dolan.
A 25-yard run by Schulte keyed a six-play, 60-yard drive that Wehling capped with a 3-yard run that gave Anamosa a 21-14 lead with 2:57 left in the third period.
Dolan came up with another key play on Williamsburg's next possession, blasting through to block a punt. Junior Jay McLean scooped it up and raced 21 yards for a touchdown and 28-14 lead with 2:02 left in the third quarter.
'I slid right in the gap, and I guess I made a big play,” Dolan said. 'It felt pretty good to get that block.
'There was a big momentum switch right there that really impacted the game.”
Schulte intercepted a pass to start the fourth quarter and, two plays later, raced 70 yards for a touchdown.
'This group of guys has been together for a long time and we don't like to lose,” Schulte said.
Anamosa is 18-2 since snapping a 26-game losing streak in the second game of the 2014 season.
