Saturday's Class 1A and 2A boys' basketball substate finals, including capsules for area games.
CLASS 1A
JESUP (21-3) vs. JANESVILLE (21-3)
Where: Cedar Falls (McLeod Center), 8 p.m.
Scouting Report: Jesup, ranked seventh by The Gazette, has had two blowout victories thus far in the postseason and a 51-49 escape of Alburnett in Thursday night's district finals. The J-Hawks trailed early in the fourth quarter, with Alburnett having two attempts to tie and force overtime in the final seconds. Jesup's three losses have been to Class 2A teams: unbeaten Dike-New Harford (twice) and Aplington-Parkersburg, which finished 18-4. It has not been to the state tournament since 1999. Janesville has never qualified for state. It upset top-ranked and unbeaten West Fork in the district finals, 53-50. Three of Jesup's top four scorers are juniors, including leading scorer Ethan Wyant (18.5 points per game). Forward Danny Amlie leads Janesville in scoring (18.8 PPG). He is one of three Wildcats who averages double figures in points.
MONTEZUMA (22-2) vs. GRAND VIEW CHRISTIAN (24-1)
Where: Knoxville, 7 p.m.
Scouting Report: Montezuma has qualified for the state tournament five times, the last time in 1990. Its last two appearances have resulted in state championships (1971, 1990). The Braves like to shoot the 3-ball, as leading scorers Dakota Strong and Brody McKeag have hoisted a combined 412 of them. Strong averages 15.9 points and McKeag 15.6. Montezuma's two losses have come to teams still alive in the posteason (Lynnville-Sully and Gladbrook-Reinbeck). Grand View Christian has an enrollment of just 51 students and does not have its own gymnasium. Four of its starters average in double figures, led by Stephen Glenn (15.6 PPG). GVC's lone loss came to Pella Christian, which is in a 2A substate final. Speaking of 3-pointers, the Thunder lead the state in 3-pointers made and attempted and in points per game (81).

CLASS 2A
ANAMOSA (19-5) vs. IOWA CITY REGINA (15-9)
Where: Cedar Rapids Washington, 7 p.m.
Scouting Report: Regina was 2A's runner-up last season, while Anamosa has never qualified for the state tournament. Regina trailed Wilton at halftime in its district championship game but outscored the Beavers in the second half, 44-19. You'll recognize many of the Regals from football. Nathan Stenger leads the team in scoring (16.7 points per game), while Andrew Adamec is next at 10. While Regina will likely prefer a half-court game, fifth-ranked Anamosa will try and push tempo and press defensively. The Blue Raiders are 15-1 since 6-foot-6 forward Tyler Zumbach returned to the lineup from injury after the Christmas break. Guard Kollin Schulte has had a tremendous senior season, averaging a team-best 22 points and shooting 53 percent from the field, 44.2 from the 3-point arc. Zumbach averages 12.4 ppg and guard Kyle Schepanski 13.8. Anamosa's only loss to a 2A team came prior to Christmas to Cascade, which also is in a substate final.

DYERSVILLE BECKMAN (16-7) vs. CASCADE (19-3)
Where: Dubuque Senior, 7 p.m.
Scouting Report: There aren't any bigger rivals than these schools, which makes their battle for a state tournament berth quite appropriate. Cascade Coach Al Marshall, 69, will retire whenever this season concludes. He has an amazing 734-226 career record in 47 years. He has led the Cougars to state six times, including a fourth-place finish in 2014. Cascade's top player is 6-foot-7 senior center Devin Green, who is a signee of NCAA Division II Sioux Falls. Green averages 20.5 points and 9.0 rebounds for a team that prefers lower-scoring games. Cascade beat Beckman in the regular season, 48-43. Beckman is part of a very strong Wamac Conference East Division. Three of its losses have come to 2A teams (Cascade and Anamosa twice). Guard Colin Squiers leads the Blazers with a 19.6 scoring average. He shoots 51 percent from 3-point land. Colton Willenbring averages 18 points per game. Beckman has qualified for state five times, the last in 2007.
