CEDAR RAPIDS — The same teams remain No. 1 in their respective classes in the second edition of The Gazette's boys' basketball rankings, though not all the No. 1s went undefeated last week.
Dubuque Wahlert lost by a point last Tuesday at Cedar Rapids Prairie but stayed atop Class 3A. The two-time defending state champion Golden Eagles bounced back with wins over Waterloo West and Oregon (Wis.).
Iowa City West won twice to improve to 5-1 and is the top-ranked team in Class 4A. Western Christian (2A) and Gladbrook-Reinbeck are the other No. 1s.
Western Christian was especially impressive in rallying from an 11-point halftime deficit to knock off Class 3A ninth-ranked Spencer, 69-57.
The rest of the 4A poll is Pleasant Valley, West Des Moines Valley, Ankeny, Des Moines Hoover, West Des Moines Dowling, Council Bluffs Lincoln, Linn-Mar, Waukee and Davenport Central, in that order. Central (6-1) enters the poll for the first time.
Chariton (6-0), Harlan (5-0), Algona (7-0) and Pella (7-0) finish out the top five in 3A. The bottom half is Atlantic, Cedar Rapids Xavier, Sioux City Heelan, Spencer and Waverly-Shell Rock.
Defending champion Treynor (6-0) remains hot on Western Christian's tail in 2A. The top five is rounded out by Dike-New Hartford, Cascade and Northeast Goose Lake.
Pella Christian, Pocahontas Area, Sioux Center, Carroll Kuemper and Aplington-Parkersburg are Nos. 6-10.
In Class 1A, West Hancock (7-0), Boyden-Hull (5-1), IKM-Manning (7-0) and South O'Brien (7-0) join Gladbrook-Reinbeck (5-0) in the top five. The bottom six are Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire, Colo-NESCO, Jesup, Meskwaki Settlement School, North Linn and West Fork.
