IOWA CITY — With each passing week, Iowa City Regina's 0-2 start becomes more of a distant memory. Sure as the fall leaves changing colors, the Regals are rolling through district play. Regina moved the ball quick on its way to a 45-7 win over Highland Friday night at Regina, but it was a game that ended due to unfortunate circumstances.
Already playing with 10-minute clocks due to the heat and a small Highland (1-4, 0-3) roster, the contest was called to a halt with 1:45 remaining in the third quarter as Highland's Dan Burton was removed via ambulance due to a suspected concussion. Burton was alert and moving his upper and lower extremities.
'We're really gonna work on keeping their spirits up,' Highland Coach Scott Morel said of his team. 'Our biggest concern is Dan right now.'
Regina (3-0, 3-2) put up points fast. Regals running back Isaac Vollstedt made the most of his limited opportunities, racking up 163 yards of offense on just six touches.
Vollstedt started the fireworks on the opening possession, ripping off runs of 42 and 15 yards, the latter capping off a three-play drive that had Regina on the board 52 seconds into the game.
The Regals' second drive took four plays as Vollstedt rumbled in once again from 14 yards out.
'I thought the whole team played well,' Vollstedt said. 'Especially the line opening up all the holes for me.'
The Regals added a two-play scoring drive as well.
The Huskies got moving in the second quarter when Trey Lasek heaved a 37-yard pass downfield to Brady Hahn. Two Regina penalties sent Highland into the red zone and after an over-the-shoulder grab by Mason McFarland, Lasek plunged in from a yard out to cut the deficit to 28-7.
The Regals tacked on 10 more quick points to close the half.
Conlon took the Regals' first play of the second half 45 more yards for the final score.
