Rain forces state baseball schedule adjustment

DES MOINES – Heavy rain and storms for the second day in a row have resulted in schedule changes to the state baseball tournament, and for some teams, a new location.

The bottom half of the Class 3A bracket will now play its quarterfinals at Southeast Polk on Wednesday morning, while Boone and Sergeant Bluff-Luton will resume their suspended game at 9 a.m. at Principal Park.

The Class 4A quarterfinals are unaffected, set to take place at Principal Park as originally scheduled Wednesday, including Cedar Rapids Kennedy's 5 p.m. game with Davenport North, followed by Iowa City West and Des Moines East at 7:30.

At Southeast Polk, which has a turf infield, Dallas Center-Grimes will meet Pella at 9 a.m., followed by Dubuque Wahlert and Harlan at 11:30 a.m. Those games will not be broadcast on KCRG 9.2 like the rest of the tournament.

Play was stopped multiple times between Boone and Sergeant Bluff-Luton, finally with the Toreadors leading 1-0 in the bottom of the second.

This comes after Cascade waited out a state tournament record five-hour rain delay to beat Mediapolis 6-2 Tuesday, which postponed Davis County and Roland-Story's 2A quarterfinal to Wednesday morning.
