Prairie hammers it at home

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Prairie Hawks weren't perfect. But they were more than good enough to win their home meet.
'It's kind of hard to assess,' Coach Chris Perkins said after Cedar Rapids Prairie won seven events and accumulated 139 points to capture Tuesday's Prairie Relays at John Wall Field.
'The competition wasn't great. Teams didn't run at full strength. We ran close to full strength. But we made some key varsity mistakes, and we've got to fix that.'
With the high school track season reaching its proverbial home stretch — the Mississippi Valley Conference divisional meets are Thursday, regionals a week after that, the state meet May 21-23 — Tuesday's meet wasn't a top priority for most. Runner-up Iowa City West, for one, competed with a partial squad.
But home was home for Prairie, and the Hawks ran hard.
'We have a lot of pride at home,' Perkins said. 'It's important to bring our best for our fans.'
Prairie built a 55-point margin on the field. West was next with 84 points, followed by Davenport West (82), Cedar Rapids Washington (75) and Cedar Rapids Xavier (73).
Sophomore distance runner Hannah Frazee had a busy night, anchoring the Hawks to victory in the distance medley relay and winning the 1,500. She was second in the 3,000.
'It was a heavy load,' Frazee said. 'It was a little rough. I wasn't really ready for that feeling in my legs, but this is the plan (for regionals), so I need to be ready.'
Frazee's expectations for regionals are simple, round numbers — 11:00 in the 3,000, 5:00 in the 1,500. Tuesday, she ran 11:06.72 and 5:09.16.
'I just need to get up and go,' she said. 'I really want to qualify for state, but I have some work to do. I'm looking forward to racing some people that can go fast.'
The Hawks also got wins from Kenzie Soeken in the high jump, Kirstin Skriver in the 400, Paige Possehl in the 800, and the 3,200-meter and sprint medley relays.
Cedar Rapids Washington's Amara Taylor was the 100-meter hurdles champion and ran the third leg on the Warriors' winning 400-meter relay.
Xavier's Brie Baldus captured the crown in the 400 hurdles. The Saints won the 1,600 relay.
