CEDAR RAPIDS — Half of the No. 1s have changed.
Pella and Boyden-Hull are the new top-ranked teams in Class 3A and 1A, respectively, in the latest Gazette boys' basketball poll.
Pella (12-1) flip-flops with Dubuque Wahlert (9-4) atop 3A after Wahlert lost its only game last week, albeit to Class 4A sixth-ranked Linn-Mar. The Lions prevailed, 90-87, in a fun offensive game that saw University of Iowa recruits Cordell Pemsl of Wahlert (34) and Jordan Bohannon of Linn-Mar (35) have a combined 69 points.
All four of Wahlert's losses are to 4A teams, three of them by three points or less. Pella's lone loss was to West Des Moines Valley (ranked second in 4A).
Cedar Rapids Xavier remains third in 3A, followed by Chariton and Webster City. Mount Vernon (10-3), which has won eight straight, moves into the poll at 10th.
West Hancock (14-1) lost its first game of the season last week, 73-63, to Garner-Hayfield/Ventura, allowing Boyden-Hull (12-1) to ascend to the top in 1A. The Comets lost their season opener to 2A Sioux Center but avenged that last week.
Colo-NESCO (13-1), Jesup (14-1), West Fork (15-0) and Gladbrook-Reinbeck (12-2) round out the top five in 1A. Meskwaki Settlement School (14-1) is eighth and Montezuma (15-0) ninth.
The other No. 1s remain the same: Pleasant Valley (13-0) in 4A and Treynor (13-0) in 2A. West Des Moines Valley (13-0) is second in 4A, followed by Iowa City West (10-3), Des Moines Hoover (11-1) and West Des Moines Dowling (10-2).
Linn-Mar (9-3) moved from eighth to sixth after a pair of impressive wins last week: Wahlert and in overtime on the road against eighth-ranked Ankeny.
After Treynor (13-0), it's Western Christian (13-1), Dike-New Hartford (15-0) and Northeast Goose Lake (14-1) in 2A. Cascade (13-1) is fifth.
