Murphy paces Linn-Mar to invitational crown

Aug. 30, 2014 3:51 pm, Updated: Aug. 30, 2014 5:42 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS - Daniel Murphy took a page out of the Josh Evans book of class Saturday morning, shaking the hand of every runner that followed him across the finish line.
'They deserve it,” Murphy said. 'It's not an easy thing.”
Murphy would know.
A senior at Linn-Mar, Murphy captured the boys' individual title at the Prairie Invitational cross country meet on the campus of College Community Schools. He finished in a meet-record 15 minutes, 26 seconds.
He wore a broad smile as he acknowledged the rest of the field. The outcome was a far cry from the last time he competed in a cross country meet.
That was last November, when something - 'maybe dehydration, maybe a virus,” he said - struck Murphy in the late stages of the state championships. He faded from the top 10 to last place and was hospitalized.
'I've just got to put that behind me,” he said. 'I sure don't want it to happen again.”
Saturday, he was the class of the field, pulling away from Prairie's Tysen VanDraska in the final mile to win by 11 seconds.
'Tysen kept nipping at my heels,” Murphy said. 'I know what kind of speed he has. I can't compete with that, so I had to work hard to get some distance.”
Dalton Gosch and Ryan Murphy were fourth and fifth, and the Lions won the individual title with 42 points, followed by Iowa City West (69), Waukee (82) and Class 4A top-ranked Prairie (101).
Evans was an individual state champion last year before moving on to Iowa State. He made a habit of greeting his competitors postrace. Saturday, it was Murphy's turn.
'It's pretty sad he's gone,” Murphy said of Evans. 'He was a great training partner. But I like this team.”
Waukee claimed the girls title behind individual champion Rachel Brush. The Warriors scored 52 points to outperform West (65). Linn-Mar (108) was third.
Brush set a meet record of her own, in 14:54. West's Emmie Skopec was the runner-up in 15:05.
'That's about where I wanted to be,” Skopec said. 'The last mile, (Brush) put in a surge. I kept trying to work back up to her. It's a long season. I hope by the end of the season, I'm able to keep up with her.”
Like Murphy, Skopec's role has changed with the graduation of an elite runner - in her case, Ashlynn Yokom.
'Coach (Mike Parker) told me I need to set the pace,” she said.
Linn-Mar's Amber Decker was fourth.
