More at stake than a win at Kennedy-Washington football game

It started between friends. Now it's a race to see who will sport the rival school's colors.

'I am pretty excited to see another principal in our clothing,” Kennedy Principal Jason Kline said.

Kennedy will play Washington in a high school football game Friday at Kingston Stadium. Both schools will be collecting coats for the KCRG Coats for Kids campaign and people are asked to donate a new or used coat of any size.

If Kennedy receives more coats than Washington, Washington Principal Carlos Grant has to wear Cougar apparel down the halls of his school on Tuesday. If Washington brings more coats, Kline has to wear Warrior attire.

The game starts at 7:15. Student government members will be sitting outside the ticket gate taking coats throughout the night.

'Washington is one of our biggest rivals and it is always a big deal defeating them,” Kline said.

This Coats for Kids campaign is national, but KCRG sponsors it for Cedar Rapids. All of the coats collected will be provided for people in the area who are unable to afford their own coats.

'I came up with this (rivalry) idea one day and decided Kennedy and Wash should join together since we get larger crowds at football games,” Kline said.

The goal is to get as many coats as possible.

'I believe this will get kids involved and help them to donate to our community,” Kline said.
