Monticello boys win 1,600-medley out of second heat
May. 20, 2016 3:43 pm
DES MOINES — All Monticello could do during the final heat of the boys 1,600-medley relay was sit, watch and hold its collective breath.
Garrett Rieniets, Noah Steiner, Derek and Matt Manternach all stood with their hands on their knees in the infield at Drake Stadium hoping their time was good enough to hold on.
'It was really tough,' Matt said. 'Coming down that last 100 I was nervous. I thought (John Crew of Dike-New Hartford) was going to get us maybe, but it turns out we just got him by a second or two.'
Monticello ran out of the second heat in the medley to win in 3:27.02, just ahead of Dike-New Hartford's 3:29.14 in heat three. The Manternach brothers were plugged into the lineup as alternates and delivered times of 49 seconds (400 split) with Derek and 1:50.5 (800 split) with Matt.
Derek and Matt were the third and fourth legs of Thursday's 3,200-relay state title win.
'I didn't know I had that in me to be honest,' Matt said of his split Friday. 'I just kicked it as hard as I could that last 200 and I knew I got out that first 400 at a good pace because I had a kid I was catching. I knew if I could finish I would have a good time.'

Iowa City Regina took third in the 800-relay in 1:29.52 while West Burlington-Notre Dame won with 1:27.14, setting a state record. Isaiah Trousil anchored the WBND team with 20.86.
'I've got to give a lot of credit to Albia and especially West Burlington-Notre Dame,' said Regina anchor Sam Lincoln. 'They did a heck of a job today, but I'm really proud of what we did this year considering we lost two of our main parts from last year. We really stepped up this year and I'm just happy with the overall result of it.'
