Monday at the Iowa boys' state basketball tournament: All the scores, stories and highlights

The first day of the 2017 Iowa high school boys' state basketball tournament is a wrap, with Class 1A quarterfinals and half of the 2A quarterfinals complete.

CLASS 2A QUARTERFINALS

No. 5 Camanche 58, No. 4 Cascade 48

Camanche avenged its only two regular-season losses against River Valley Conference foe Cascade.

The Indians went on a game-deciding 10-0 run after the Cougars tied it at 43 on Johnny Suple's 3 with 4:25 left.

Suple had a game-high 22 points and 19 boards for the Cougars. Freshman Cameron Soenksen led Camanche with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

No. 1 Western Christian 53, No. 8 South Hamilton 47

Defending champion Western Christian overcame a 16-point first-half deficit to advance.

Down 29-13 midway through the second quarter, Western ended the half on a 10-0 run, then Jesse Jansma's 3-pointer with 1:38 left in the third put the Wolfpack up 40-38.

Jansma finished with a game-high 25 points and Western never trailed in the fourth quarter.

Marco Balderas led the Hawks with 12. Tyson Kooima also had 12, plus nine rebounds, for the Wolfpack.

CLASS 1A QUARTERFINALS

No. 2 Grand View Christian 59, No. 7 West Hancock 36

Grand View led 10-1 after the first quarter and cruised to the semifinals.

Grant DeMeulenaere had 21 points, Mcah Nyaw 12 and Arturo Montes 11, plus 12 rebounds.

West Hancock cut the lead to five shortly after making its first shot from the field early in the second quarter, but trailed 28-15 at halftime.

Dylan Eckels led the Eagles with 11 points.

No. 3 Remsen St. Mary's 59, No. 6 New London 52

St. Mary's built a nine-point lead in a fast-paced first quarter and, despite New London coming within one in the fourth, stayed unbeaten.

Keontae Luckett's bucket on the first play of the fourth brought New London to within 41-40, but Nicholas Ruden answered on the next possession and the Hawks used a 9-1 run to go up 53-43.

Ruden poured in a game-high 26 points and had seven rebounds. Jacob Wesselmann added 19 points on 5-for-8 3-point shooting and also pulled down seven boards.

Mason Porter led New London, which cut the lead to 29-26 at halftime, with 19.

No. 1 North Linn 54, No. 8 Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto 49

North Linn survived its closest test yet this season to stay undefeated and advance to the 1A semifinals.

The Lynx led by a point at halftime and after the third quarter before pulling away in the fourth.

Jake Hilmer, the state's assists leader, had a game-high 18 points, plus seven assists and four steals.

Ryan Miller had 12 for the Lynx, whose previous closest game was 11. Juan Delegarza and Colby Seuntjens led MVAO with 11 points apiece.

No. 4 Gladbrook-Reinbeck 53, No. 5 Lynnville-Sully 50

Joe Smoldt scored 29 points and fourth-seeded Gladbrook-Reinbeck held off Lynnville-Sully in the tournament opener.

Smoldt was 11-of-25 from the field, including 3-for-8 from 3-point range.

The Rebels built a nine-point lead in the third quarter, but L-S came back to go up 38-37 on Tanner Foster's 3 with 4:51 remaining, then 40-39 on a Foster layup.

G-R answered with an 8-2 run, then Walker Thede stole the ball up three with 27 seconds to go and the Rebels sealed it at the free-throw line.
