Marion 48, North Scott 40
It hurt for North Scott senior Olivia Schmidt to admit what she did Tuesday night after the Lancers fell to Marion, 48-40, in their Class 4A regional final.
But Schmidt gave credit where it was due.
'The better team won,' Schmidt said. 'We wanted it bad but they are a good team and they hit some big shots and you can't take that away from them.'
Schmidt did everything she could in her final game at The Pit, scoring a team-high 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. But the sixth-ranked Lancers (18-5) could not overcome long scoring droughts and some tough turnovers down the stretch when the game was close.
The Indians' Caitlyn Smith was a one-person wrecking crew in the second half. At one point, the sophomore scored 11 straight points to help her team pull free from the Lancers.
In a two-minute stretch at the end of the third quarter and into the first part of the fourth, Smith buried three 3-pointers to keep North Scott at bay. Smith's two foul shots with 52 seconds put Marion up 45-40 and put the Lancers in a scramble mode. Smith finished with a game-high 17 points. Chloe Rice added another 11 for the winners.
