IOWA CITY - For the first time in years, the City High boys' cross country team is taking to the basketball court in order to help the girls scrimmage.
Due to a difference in numbers and skill level between the girls' junior varsity and varsity teams, the endurance athletes were seen as a good substitute scout team.
So far, three group practices have occurred, for a few hours each time. The boys were first contacted through head cross country coach Jayme Skay, and participation is volunteer-based.
Before each practice, the boys watch 10 minutes of the girls' opponent's game film in order to best simulate the kind of offense the girls will be facing the following night.
'It's super fun, and we're making the team better, so (we're happy to help),” junior-varsity cross country runner Sy Butler said. 'We're pretty bad, but improving.”
