DES MOINES — With the quarterfinals in the books, Lisbon has grabbed the lead in the 1A team state wrestling race.
The Lions ended the session with 50.5 points, edging out Sibley-Ocheyedan (44) and Don Bosco (37). It was not a great round for the Dons, who pushed just one wrestler of six into the semifinals.
Lisbon sent four of six through, putting itself in serious contention for the traditional title. Cobe Siebrecht (106), Cael Happel (113), Ryne Mohrfeld (120), and Cooper Siebrecht (132) are all into the semifinals for the Lions.
Wapsie Valley also pushed several wrestlers through, with No. 3-ranked 126-pounder Donny Schmit and No. 2 Kaleb Krall (138) headed into the semifinals as well.
Several other area top-ranked wrestlers also managed to find their way to the semifinals. English Valleys' undefeated Zach Axmear had a huge 11-3 major decision over No. 4-ranked Drew Anderson of Westwood.
Alburnett's Tanner Sloan (170) and Iowa Valley's Jacob Krakow (160) also stayed in the winners' bracket, picking up an 18-2 technical fall and a 10-4 decision, respectively.
The Pirates, as a team, sit in fifth place with four wrestlers still alive, two in the winners' bracket.
There also will likely be an area finalist at 182 as Maquoketa Valley's Alec McDowell and Iowa Valley's Garet Sims will both wrestle Friday night for a spot in the championship.
At 285, Jesup's Brian Sadler, North Linn's Kyler Schott and Iowa City Regina wrestler Jared Brinkman also will all be in semifinal action Friday evening.
