Linn-Mar's Stephanie Jenks wins 4 in her home finale

Apr. 12, 2016 11:07 pm
MARION — Stephanie Jenks competed at Linn-Mar Stadium for the final time, but she wasn't running down a sentimental street.
'I'm a little sad that I won't run here again, but next year ... the next chapter is going to be so exciting,' Jenks said.
The senior distance ace — she'll be an Iowa distance legend in a matter of weeks — won four events as Linn-Mar dominated at the Lion Invitational girls' track and field meet Tuesday at Linn-Mar Stadium.
A University of California recruit, Jenks breezed to victory in the 3,000 (9:59.34), 800 (2:2067) and 1,500 (4:49.13). In the 400-meter hurdles, she had to come from behind down the stretch to catch Marion's Sydney Brase.
Jenks was clocked in 1:09.42, Brase in 1:10.08.
'I told (Linn-Mar Coach Nathan) Hopp that I wanted to run four today,' Jenks said. 'The debate would be whether I would run the 800 or not.'
There are still frontiers Jenks wants to reach before she jets off to Berkeley. She holds the all-time Iowa best in the 3,000, and is after the same thing in the 800 and 1,500. So there's no complancency, boredom or senioritis.
'I have a good support team at Berkeley,' she said. 'The coaches are always there for me.'
Linn-Mar broke three school records, won nine events and tallied 181 points. Marion was second with 87, followed by Cedar Rapids Kennedy (81).
Payton Wensel anchored the 800-meter relay and the sprint medley to school marks of 1:44.86 and 1:48.55, respectively. The sprint-medley unit of Jill Bennett, Kira Ramsey, Brooke Lorenz and Wensel moved to the top of the chart in Iowa this season.
'It was a great day,' Wensel said. 'We wanted to better our times so we can get good lanes at Drake. We still need better seed times in a couple relays.'
Freshman Megan Renner earned her own school mark, clearing 5 feet, 4 inches on her second attempt in the high jump.
'Coming in, because of the weather, I hadn't jumped hardly at all outside the last two weeks,' Renner said. 'I just tried to get in the mindset that I was going to jump high.
'I'd been doing some run-throughs and some lifting and working on my steps.'
Linn-Mar also won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter relays.
Kennedy got a lot out of its sprinters. Amarri Waller captured the 100, Cheyenne Mitchell grabbed the 200, and they teamed with Jurnee Rose-Johnson and Tianna Drahn to claim the 400-meter relay. The Cougars also won the shuttle hurdle relay.
'Our coaches keep pushing us to be a better team than we've been,' Waller said. 'We're pushing through the pain.'
Marion earned second place despite just one winner — Bre Smith (36-10) and Mahlia Brown (36-9) were 1-2 in the shot put.
Xavier won three events: Meghan Joens in the discus, Theresa Lampe in the 100 hurdles and the distance medley relay. Washington's Vanessa Eniola was the long jump champion.
