Kennedy climbs into the 4A top 5
Jeff Linder Sep. 14, 2015 4:37 pm
Cedar Rapids Kennedy's ascent has reached the top five in Class 4A.
The Cougars (3-0) climbed to No. 5 in this week's Gazette/KCRG/KGYM poll, released Monday afternoon. Kennedy handled North Scott, 42-0, Friday at Kingston Stadium.
Kennedy has matched last year's victory total. The Cougars were 3-8 in 2014.
West Des Moines Valley remains No. 1. The Tigers (3-0) meet No. 3 West Des Moines Dowling (2-0) this week. Valley earned seven of eight first-place votes; No. 2 Bettendorf (3-0) received the other.
Cedar Falls is No. 4. Cedar Rapids Washington is up three notches to No. 7.
Pella and Iowa City Regina remained unanimous No. 1 selections in Class 3A and Class 1A, respectively. Regina has won five consecutive state championships and 72 of its last 73 games.
West Delaware and Cedar Rapids Xavier are Pella's top two challengers in the 3A poll. West Delaware is scoring at a 47.3-point clip; Xavier rallied from a 12-point deficit Friday to defeat Solon, 22-19.
Spirit Lake is a slim leader over Albia in Class 2A. Last week, the Indians and the Blue Demons were co-No. 1s.
Both enjoyed convincing wins in Week 3: Spirit Lake drubbed Central Lyon/George-Little Rock, 42-8, while Albia whipped Pella Christian, 62-21.
South Tama is No. 3 and leads a list of five Gazette-area teams in the 2A top 10. Anamosa, Waukon, North Fayette Valley and Dyersville Beckman are fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth.
West Branch remains No. 3 in Class 1A.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck reclaims the top spot in Class A after dropping to No. 2 last week. The Rebels throttled Conrad BCLUW, 64-0, while Denver fell out of the top spot after losing, 42-7, to 1A No. 2 Dike-New Hartford. BGM climbs to No. 2.
Newell-Fonda remains the pace-setter in the 8-Player class. Four points separate Nos. 2-5, with Fremont-Mills leading that pack.
